The government today approved formation of an Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) to fast track road projects, many of them are facing inordinate delays due to bottlenecks at various levels.
"The Cabinet Committee on infrastructure today approved constitution of an Empowered Group of Ministers as a standing arrangement to resolve all road related issues where there is a lack of unanimity in committees at the level of officers and which do not require approval of cabinet or CCI," a government official told PTI.
The formation of the EGoM is in line with recommendations of the B K Chaturvedi Committee, formed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to suggest ways to expedite road projects.
The proposal was based on recommendations given by a Planning Commission committee, headed by panel member BK Chaturvedi to expedite road projects, the official said.
The EGoM, among other issues, has been vested with powers to fine-tune regulations and change bidding norms for road projects if required, sources said.
The Chaturvedi committee comprised Finance Secretary Ashok Chawla and Transport Secretary Brahm Dutt.
It has already submitted first part of its report to the Prime Minister, recommending relaxing the controversial concessionaire's agreement to make projects attractive, which was also approved today.
Road Transport and Highways Minister Kamal Nath has already set a target of building 35,000 km of highways in the next five years.
