Govt plans extensive security cover for C'wealth Games
Press Trust of India / New Delhi Oct 02, 2009, 16:24 IST

The Ministry of Home Affairs has planned out an extensive security cover for the 2010 Commonwealth games which includes a complete integration of various security agencies and use of hi-tech gadgets.

Official sources said the many components of central paramilitary forces and various intelligence agencies would work together as "one security mechanism" along with the Delhi Police who have already been sanctioned over Rs 60 crore for procurement of new gadgets.

The elite National Security Guards have been asked to provide men for special deputation, especialy snipers, to be deployed at various venues, the sources said.

The Quick Reaction Teams of the other paramilitary forces would also be kept ready to move in quickly in case of any eventuality, they said, adding the "stress" is not just about providing security to games sites but also to every player or official who comes down for the event.

As per projections, about 8,000 athletes from 72 countries will participate and over 1,00,000 spectators are likely to turn up for the sporting extravaganza next year.

The Delhi Police was recently sanctioned 337 new vehicles, including about 270 motorcycles and 29 pick-up vans.

Rs 60 crore has also been alloted for procurement of anti-sabotage equipment, mine sweepers and other such gadgets.

The Delhi police is also likely to induct spy vans used by many western countries for keeping round the clock surveillance of specific locations and also to be used in VIP routes.

Sources said besides the local police, the Directors General of Police of different states have been sensitised to ensure a safe and secure environment during the event.

Over 2,000 close-circuit television cameras will keep a watchful eye on the happenings in the city and keep sending live images to a state-of-the-art police control room, being set up at the police headquarters here.
