The government has released 1.49 million tonnes of sugar to be sold in the open market in July, while dispensing with the quarterly release order system till December.
"The Central Government has decided to release non-levy sugar quota of 1.49 million tonnes for July," according to a statement issued by the Food Ministry.
While the normal quota for July will be 1.26 million tonnes, 133,000 tonnes would be available from the dismantled buffer stock and 90,000 tonnes out of imported raw sugar taking the total quantity to 1.49 million tonnes, it said.
In July last year, the quota was 1.2 milion tonnes, excluding the quantity released from the dismantled buffer stock.
For supply under the public distribution system, 170,000 tonnes of levy sugar has been released, it added.
The statement also said: "The Government has decided to do away with the earlier practice of announcing the non-levy sugar quota on a quarterly basis till suspension of futures trading in sugar remains in force."
The announcement of sugar quota release order will henceforth be monthly, it added.
