Government today said it was carrying out research and development for using hydrogen as an alternative fuel for running transport and other power generation applications.
"We are implementing a broad-based research, development and demonstration programme on hydrogen production, its storage and utilisation as an alternative fuel for transport and centralised power generation applications," New and Renewable Energy Minister Farooq Abdullah said in a written reply in Lok Sabha.
He said the Research and Development programme was being done by various agencies such as the laboratories of the Central Scientific and Industrial Research institute and other public and private sector organisations.
Replying to another query, Abdullah said his Ministry was promoting projects on energy recovery from urban and industrial wastes, including garbage.
"The cost of power generation from these wastes is about Rs 2.50 to Rs 4 per unit of electricity... These costs are competitive with the cost of power generated from conventional sources," he said.
The minister informed that 36 projects with aggregate capacity of 83.13 MW power from urban and industrial wastes have so far been set up in the country.
