| Govt to set up 6,000 model schools including 2,500 on PPP mode |

Putting primary eduction programme on a fast track, the government today decided to set up 6,000 model schools, including 2,500 under the public-private-partnership (PPP) mode, before the start of the next academic session.
"There is a programme for setting up 6,000 model schools in the country — 3,500 on a 100 per cent government basis and 2,500 on a PPP mode.
Both the Ministry (Human Resource Development) and we have been looking at how this can be done," Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia told reporters after a meeting with the HRD Minister Kapil Sibal.
"In the next four weeks we will have a model ready to be adopted by us. In three weeks time there will be a presentation here in the Planning Commission after that model is somewhat ready and we will move ahead and make sure that this is done for the next academic year," HRD Minister Kapil Sibal said.
The HRD Ministry, Sibal said, will build 2,500 model schools, which will be better than the Kendriya Vidyalayas, while the remaining 3,500 will be set up by the government.
As regards the PPP model, Sibal said, "The nitty gritty of this will have to be worked out. We are going to have the private sector coming... We will have FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industries) and other people participating in the process."
