Press Trust of India / New Delhi July 1, 2009, 13:34 IST

"The city was hit by heat wave of such intensity after 13 years and the delay in Monsoon only added to the problem. The demand for electricity too has shot up drastically touching over 4000 Mw this year from around 1900 Mw a decade ago," Dikshit said.

She said the city will become a power surplus one in a couple of years. "It will take some time but we will do the job," she said while speaking at an event jointly organised by Delhi Power Co Ltd, Delhi Transco Ltd and Indraprastha Power Generation.

General Manager of Pragati Power Corporation Ltd Rajinder Tiku said the work on 1500 Mw power plant at Bawana is in full swing and will be completed by March next year before the Commonwealth Games.

A joint venture project with Haryana government is also under execution in which a 1500 Mw plant is being set up at Jhajjar. Delhi will receive 750 Mw from this plant, he said.

Land has also been acquired for setting up 750 Mw power project at Bamnauli, which is expected to be commissioned by 2012-13, the official said.
