Green Gold Animation, a city-based provider of animation content to kids channels like Cartoon Network and Pogo, is planning to produce a 2D animated feature film ‘Chhota Bheem’ at an investment of $2 million (approximately Rs 9.2 crore).
“The 90-minute movie, which is currently in the scripting stage, will have its theatrical release next year,” Rajiv Chilaka, founder and managing director of Green Gold, told mediapersons here on Thursday.
Green Gold’s Chhota Bheem series, in co-production with Turner International, is currently on air on Pogo. The company has so far produced over 100 episodes of animated content, including Krishna, Krishna-The-Birth and Vikram Betal for children’s channels.
Chilaka said three more television shows based on mythological characters were in the pipeline for various channels with whom they had entered into non-disclosure agreements. The shows will be telecast this Diwali, he said, adding “the company’s aim is to first bring smiles to Indian kids before tapping the overseas market in the next two-three years.”
Green Gold today opened its second animation academy in Hyderabad, the first being in Warangal. The first batch is expected to commence from the second week of this April. The academy will offer one-year diploma (six months of 2D traditional and flash character animation and six months of 2D traditional and 3D character animation) and 3-month specialisation courses.
“Each batch will have 30 students and we plan to absorb a majority of them into the company once they pass out,” Chilaka said, adding the company would be opening an animation studio on 5,000 sft land, which was offered by the West Bengal government in Kolkata, by the end of April.
Green Gold recently ventured into comic book publishing, merchandising and home DVD business and has so far published 200,000 books of Chhota Bheem in 20 volumes.
“We are planning to publish two original comics each month. Comic publishing, merchanding and licensing contribute 10 per cent to our revenues. We expect this to account for 80 per cent in the next five years,” Chilaka said.
