| Japanese pharmaceutical major Eisai today signed a marketing agreement with GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals to co-promote the former's new generation anti-ulcer drug Paritec -- rabeprazole sodium in India.

| The pact will allow the companies to jointly market the Japanese brand in the Rs 80 crore rabeprazole market in the country.

| Based on this agreement, the product will be formulated at the GSK facility in India by importing the bulk from Eisai Japan, said the company officials.

| With the launch of this product in India, Paritec becomes the first Japanese brand entering the country's pharma market. It may be recalled that Eisai was the first Japanese company entered India through 100 per cent subsidiary.

| Paritec, a proton pump inhibitor discovered and developed by Eisai Co. Ltd, is one of the global blockbuster drugs of the company with a worldwide sales of $1.32 billion. In India, the peptic ulcer and reflux gastric disorder drug market is pegged at Rs 650 crore.

| The segment is currently covered by 40 odd generic brands by various Indian companies.

| Announcing the co-promotion agreement, Kalyana Sundaram, managing director, GSK Pharma Ltd, said the company has a strong presence in the country's gastro-intestinal market and enjoys reputation among the medical fraternity on of its existing brand Zantac.

| "With Paritec, we will have an excellent molecule in rabeprazole that will effectively fulfill the unmet patient needs and allow us offer a product in high growth market segment," he added.

| Speaking on the occasion, Hideshi Honda, executive officer and vice president, Eisai Co., said "as a leading research based Japanese pharmaceutical company, we studied the Indian market and decided to launch Paritec here. GSK with its long presence in the country and undisputed market leadership."

| He added that establishing a 100 per cent subsidiary in the country and this co-promotion pact with GSK India reflects our long term commitment to India. Eisai Co., will be soon launching their anti-Alzheimer's brand Aricept soon in India. |
