Gujarat poised to achieve 20,000 MW capacity in 2 years
Maulik Pathak & Kalpesh Damor / Mumbai/ Ahmedabad Aug 27, 2009, 00:57 IST

With Gujarat's installed capacity of power crossing 10,000 Mw, the state is poised to achieve a power generation capacity of 20,000 MW over the period of two years.

Recently, the installed power capacity of Gujarat has reached to 11,011.5 Mw. Out of the total 34 conventional power projects with a cumulative capacity to the tune of 37,110 MW announced during the Vibrant Summit in 2007, three plants have fully been commissioned. These three projects have installed capacity of 1,486 MW.

"As many as nine projects with 9,800 MW installed capacity are in the process of being commissioned and they are likely to be operational within two years", Saurabh Patel, minister of state for energy and petrochemicals, government of Gujarat, said while addressing a high power committee meeting today.

The high power committee also reviewed the progress of power projects, memorandums of understanding (MoUs) of which were signed during the vibrant summits held in the year 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2009. In order to speed the implementation and cut the gestation period, the state government also made suggestions to project developers.

"As far as the power projects announced during vibrant summit in 2009 are concerned, the actual progress would be known only after one to two years", the minister informed. Gujarat government had signed 31 MoUs aggregating 43,000 MW in the summit this year.

The committee also took stock of the coal blocks alloted to Gujarat, which also include Naini coal block and Mahanadi coal block
