Gujarat tops among all the states in terms of computerisation of income-tax (I-T) departments. The state also has 26 lakh permanent account number (PAN) card holders, ranking second behind Maharashtra.
At an open house on I-T issues organised by the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the All Gujarat Federation of Tax Consultants, R N Srivastava, the chief commissioner, I-T, said that the department has cleared 3,76,000 refund cases till January 31 this year.
"Tax collection in India increased by 20 per cent than last year, while the number of tax payers has increased 17 per cent. It is expected that the Union budget of 2003-04 will include measures aimed at administrative changes in the I-T department, if the Kelkar Committee report on tax reforms is followed by the finance ministry," said Srivastava, adding the rest of the I-T refund cases were being expedited by the department.
