| The state has sounded high alert in parts of central and south Gujarat as rivers were flowing above the danger level and most reservoirs were full to capacity due to heavy rains. The government, has initiated large scale evacuation of persons residing in low lying areas that have got flooded.

| However, a high level meeting was held and an action plan has been chalked out to bring the situation under control. Over 30,000 people across the state have been evacuated so far. 40 persons have so far died in the spell of rains in the state.

| The worst affected districts are Anand, Kheda and Vadodara in central Gujarat besides Navsari and Dangs in south Gujarat. The government has sought the services of the army in evacuating people.

| In Vadodara district alone, over 10,000 people residing in low lying areas, have been shifted to safer places in the past 24 hours.

| The Flood Control Department of has declared high alert in the areas of 21 major water reserves and alert in the nearby areas of eight reserves as incessant rain is continuing for about a week here.

| Water level at Sardar Sarovar Dam is also increasing speedily. The water is flowing at 111.55 meter height whereas the height of the dam is 110.6 meters.

| So far, over 1,50,000 people have been evacuated to safer place so far at Navsari, Anand, Vadodara, Surat, Surendrnagar, Rajkot and Amreli.

| The state government has posted one column each of state reserve police in Rajkot and Surendrnagar for rescue work. The rescue work of Rajkot Municipal Corporation' fire brigade has been sent to Amreli and Surendranagar.

| There have been about 50 deaths reported so far in various parts of the state due to drawning, electric shocks and wall collapse. Meanwhile, power supply has been disrupted at 4,303 villages, 35 town and city areas.

| The Pratapura reservoir and the Ajwa lake on the outskirts of Vadodara are overflowing and people living in the vicinity have been alerted to shift to safer places. The situation in Amreli district also turned grim with heavy rains being reported overnight in Khambha, Sabarkundla and Rajula talukas.

| Officials managed to rescue five passengers, who were stuck overnight in a state transport bus in Amreli district after rain water blocked roads completely.

| Constant downpour has also affected road traffic in more than 500 routes including two national highways and efforts were on to clear the roads for smooth traffic flow.

| In Bhavnagar district too the water levels rose after the 59 doors of the Shetreji dam were opened last night prompting those living in the vicinity to shift to safer places. Dangs district was also badly affected with the showers and almost all approach roads were cut off, officials said.

| State Relief Commissioner Rajesh Kishore told Business Standard on Thursday that two columns of the army had been deployed at Vadodara and one at Surat and they have already begun operations of evacuating people to safer areas.

| "Two more columns have been kept on alert at Rajkot and we have asked for more forces from the defence services," Kishore said. |
