The Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court has directed the Maharashtra government to file a detailed reply on the steps being taken to prevent malnutrition deaths in children in the Vidarbha region.
A division bench of Justice D D Sinha and Justice R C Chavan, hearing an application filed by an advocate Firos Mirza over the threat of malnutrition deaths noted that the situation was "serious" and observed that the state administration has failed to provide basic needs to the tribals.
The High Court has further warned of stringent action against the officials, if its directive was not complied with early as possible.
Mirza in his application stated that there are over 1,67,000 tribal children in Yavatmal district of western Vidarbha, who are under threat of malnutrition, 142 of whom are in critical stage.
