Incessant rainfall for the past few days has triggered flood fury across Assam.
Most of the tributaries and distributaries of the mighty Brahmaputra are flowing above or close to their respective danger levels. Nearly two lakh people and 30,000 hectares have been affected by floods across the state.
Rivers like Buridehing, Subansiri, Pagladia, Manash, Beki, Sonkoch, Katachal are flowing above danger levels in at least eight places.
North Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Sonitpur, Jorhat, Nagaon, and Barpeta are the worst affected districts. The river island of Majuli is at the receiving end of flood fury after an embankment was breached.
The National Disaster Rescue Force has been pressed into service. Sources said that the situation had further worsened after release of water from Kurishu Dam in Bhutan and Karbi-Langpih Hydel Project in central Assam. Also, most of the rivers are in full spate due to incessant rainfall in upper reaches and catchment areas for the past few days.
The Matmora embankment in North Lakhimpur district in Upper Assam, which every year hits headlines as it gets washed away by floodwaters, has again been breached this year. The embankment was recently constructed using geo-fabric technology at a cost of Rs. 1.4 crore.
