The Mumbai massacre has moved the Mysore district administration to chalk out measures to meet any such eventuality in this city, which is famous for its heritage structures, including the gorgeous Palace, which attracts record visitors, and some premier research, industry and other organisations.
In the wake of the terror attacks in the financial capital of the country, the district disaster management cell held a meeting and deliberated on the prevailing facilities and precautionary measures to be initiated in the district. It also reviewed the present situation and measures to be taken in any such eventuality in any part of the district.
The meeting was told that a watch is being kept on suspected terrorist elements. The police have formed citizens’ committees to create awareness among the public about the precautions that the public should take to ensure that such elements got no opportunity to operate in their areas. It decided to distribute handbills in this regard.
Police officers attending the meeting informed that newcomers to the city taking houses for rent and those staying in hotels and lodges were being monitored. A list of such new tenants was also being prepared.
The meeting decided to upgrade and strengthen the wireless network in the district, to facilitate speedy action in any such situation. A wireless network is already in operation through the disaster management cell.
Deputy commissioner P Manivannan, who chaired the meeting, asked the officials to tighten vigil and appropriate measures in places that draw big crowds like tourist spots, reservoirs and leading hotels. He called for a coordinated approach to step up vigil in the district. It may be recalled that two suspected Pakistani nationals were arrested some time back on the ring road.
Security measures have been tightened at the major tourist attraction, the Palace with metal detectors and baggage scanning. Mysore was among other cities that were placed on high alert in the wake of Mumbai attacks.
