Hindalco, a BS 200 company, posted a 21.6 per cent rise in net profit at Rs 222.2 crore for the fourth quarter ended March 31, 2004 compared with Rs 182.9 crore in the corresponding period last year. Net sales grew 42.80 per cent to Rs 1,901.6 crore (Rs 1,331.6 crore).
D Bhattacharya, managing director, Hindalco said: “While the aluminum margins improved, the impact was partly offset by low profitability in the copper business on account of a weak trend in treatment charges, strenghteing rupee and tariff reduction.”
During the quarter, turnover from the aluminum division rose 25.5 per cent to Rs 874 crore (Rs 698 crore). Turnover from the copper division grew 62.4 per cent to Rs 1028 crore (Rs 634 crore).
Meanwhile, net profit for the year ended March 2004 grew 43.99 per cent to Rs 838.9 crore from Rs 582.1 crore in the corresponding period last year. Turnover rose 24.17 per cent to Rs 6,190.9 crore (Rs 4,985.4 crore). The company announced a dividend of Rs 16.50 per cent.
