The ongoing European crisis, which sent global markets into a downward spiral, did not spare Smart Portfolios either. However, a majority of our fund managers managed to outsmart the benchmark in the last five trading days.

An investment of Rs 10 lakh in the Smart Portfolios benchmark, S&P CNX 500 index, is now worth Rs 10.76 lakh since its inception on September 1, 2009, despite a 3.7 per cent fall recently. In comparison, fund managers' returns till date range from seven per cent to 36 per cent each.

Ajay Parmar executed just one trade, wherein he exited from the doomed Aban Offshore for a loss of nearly 31 per cent. This stock was one of the prime reasons for a 4.8 per cent dip in his net worth to Rs 12.80 lakh. Parmar now holds 18 stocks and Rs 4.24 lakh in cash. Rallis India and Cadila Healthcare are the top performers in his portfolio, while IVR Prime and Deccan Chronicle are the major laggards.
 

Amar Ambani
Vice-President (Research), India Infoline

Amar Ambani executed 25 trades last week. His gross purchases totalled Rs 2.16 lakh, while gross sales amounted to Rs 6.43 lakh. His portfolio value depreciated 1.5 per cent to Rs 13.58 lakh, and his aggressive selling helped him raise his cash levels to Rs 9.21 lakh. Ambani now holds just 12 stocks in his portfolio. Zandu Realty is the major mover, while Suzlon the major loser.
 

Vinay Khattar
Head, Research (WAIS), Edelweiss

Vinay Khattar was in an all-buy mode and he pumped Rs 2.64 lakh into the markets. His net worth was down 1.6 per cent at Rs 11.39 lakh. His fresh buys included Sesa Goa, Yes Bank and Ashok Leyland. Techno Electric leads the gainer list in his portfolio, while Aries Agro is the chief dragger. Khattar's market investments are valued at Rs 4.37 lakh and he holds Rs 7.02 lakh in cash.
 

Phani Sekhar
Fund Manager (PMS), Angel Broking

Phani Sekhar revamped his portfolio and is now left with almost zero cash. His net worth declined over three per cent to Rs 10.72 lakh. Some of the fresh buys include Punj Lloyd, Sterlite and Great Eastern Shipping. Interestingly, all his current investments are trading below his cost price, while he booked profits in each of the sell order in the last days. eClerx, Federal Bank, Esab India and Axis Bank were the major beneficiaries for him. Tech Mahindra and Bharti Airtel are the major laggards currently.
