HMSI targets 17 per cent growth in turnover in 2009-10
BS Reporter / Kolkata/ Bhubaneswar Nov 27, 2009, 00:39 IST

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Limited (HMSI), the market leader in the scooter segment in the country, expects a 17 per cent growth in its turnover in the current fiscal. The company clocked a turnover of Rs 500 crore in 2008-09.

The growth in the company's turnover is set to come on the back of the increase in sales of its two wheeler models.

HMSI aims to sell 12.5 lakh units of two-wheelers (motorcycles and gearless scooters) this fiscal compared to 10.7 lakh units in 2008-09. The company's manufacturing facility at Manesar (Haryana) has a capacity to churn out 15 lakh two-wheelers per annum.

Shinji Aoyama, president and chief executive officer, HMSI said, “We achieved a turnover of around Rs 500 crore in 2008-09 and expect a 17 per cent growth in this fiscal. HMSI invests more than Rs 100 crore every year on its India operations and our cumulative investment in the country since 2001 have reached Rs 900 crore.”

Aoyama was in the city in connection with the launch of the new variant of Aviator, a gearless scooter model of HMSI.

While HMSI is the market leader in the scooter segment with a share of 54 per cent, its share in the overall two-wheeler market in the country stands at 14 per cent.

In eastern India, HMSI has a market share of eight per cent and it is looking to raise its share to 10 per cent by the end of this fiscal, said N K Rattan, operating head (sales and marketing), HMSI.

The two-wheeler major sells nearly 7000 units per month in the eastern region which includes 1800 units sold in the Orissa market.

“We plan to sell 10,000 units per month of the new Aviator through our 690 outlets across the country”, he added.

The new variant of Aviator offers 15 per cent more mileage than the earlier model. The striking feature of the new Aviator is the Combi brake.

In the new system, the front and the rear brakes get activated jointly when the left lever is pressed whereas in the conventional system, only the rear brake gets activated when the left lever is applied.

The new Aviator comes in two variants- Standard and Deluxe which are priced at Rs 44,419 and Rs 49,514 (ex-showroom-Bhubaneswar) respectively.
