Students would be given a moratorium on interest for education loans taken from banks sanctioned during 'Education Loan Campaigns', Union Home Minister P Chidambaram today said.
The moratorim on interest would be from the start of a course and till its completion - maximum upto four years- plus an additional six months. The Centre would bear the interest during these period, he said inaugurating the campaign here.
He said the Centre wanted to provide financial support to students aspiring for higher studies and extend scholarships and incentives to meritorious students. It was planned to to increase opportunities for higher studies by opening more central universities and technical and management institutions in all regions.
The Centre has planned to expand the loan base for the aspiring students with an aim to enrich the human resource of the country within 15 years and make it fully competent, Chidambaram said.
Later talking to reporters, he said the Centre would soon open seven management institutes across the country and a central university in Tamil Nadu.
On the naxal issue, he said the Centre had planned intense action to tackle the naxalite menace.
