As Naxalites violence continued unabated, the Home Ministry today held a meeting of top police officers of the states to solicit their views on the procurement of modern arms and ammunition centrally.
The meeting, chaired by Special Secretary (internal security) U K Bansal and attended by Inspectors General of Police of the states, discussed the weaponry requirement of the states, the time taken for their procurement and other relevant issues.
The meeting was convened following the discussion on arms procurement at the last Chief Ministers conference where several Chief Ministers, including Bihar's Nitish Kumar, had proposed that the Centre should procure modern arms and ammunition directly and give it to the states.
Accepting the suggestion, Home Minister P Chidambaram had said: "In order to quicken the procurement of weapons, the central government may consider central procurement of weapons on behalf of the states.
"We are seeking their views on procurement and the kind of arms they require. The Central government will see how fast the process could be completed for the benefit of the states," a Home Ministry official said.
The meeting was also attended by Director General of National Security Guard N P S Aulakh, who made a presentation on the weapons used by his force.
