Honda Motorcycle to ramp up production to meet sales target
Press Trust of India / New Delhi Aug 28, 2009, 10:04 IST

Two-wheeler maker Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) today said it will invest over Rs 200 crore this fiscal in ramping up capacity and upgrading all models to Bharat Stage-III emission norms.

The company is also looking to produce bikes above 250 cc category in India.

"Within this financial year we will upgrade all our models to BS-III emission norms compliant and for that we will invest over Rs 100 crore in our Research and Development (R&D) activities," HMSI President and CEO Shinji Aoyama told reporters on the sidelines of SIAM annual convention here.

Besides the upgraded models, HMSI would also roll out a 100 cc bike and few variants of existing models by March 2010, he added.

The company is targeting to sell one lakh units of its proposed 100 cc bike within the first year of its launch.

HMSI is also expanding its production capacity at its Manesar plant to 15 lakh units by the end of this year from 10.7 lakh units.

"We are expecting about 20 per cent growth in sales during this fiscal and for that we are ramping up our capacity. We will invest Rs 100 crore in our assembly lines and purchasing new machineries," Aoyama said. The company had sold 10.7 lakh units during the last financial year.

When asked if the company would assemble its higher power bikes in India, Aoyama said: "A deeper study for assembling bikes above 250 cc category in India is going on. We will very soon decide on locally producing these powerful bikes."

The company has already launched a new scooter Activa and a new version of 125 cc bike CBF Stunner.

So far this fiscal the company has grown by 26 per cent, of which the motorcycle sales have grown by 45 per cent, while scooter segment moved upwards by 10 per cent.
