ICICI offers health insurance to 30,000 artisan families
BS Reporter / Kolkata/ Bhubaneswar Apr 08, 2010, 00:15 IST

ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company Limited in association with the Union ministry of textiles, Government of India, has provided comprehensive health insurance to 30,000 artisan families in Orissa in 2009-10 under the Rajiv Gandhi Shilpi Swasthya Bima Yojana (RGSSBY).

RGSSBY is the first ever cashless health insurance initiative for the artisans in India, giving cashless access for day-to-day OPD (Out patient Department) treatment. It aims at providing health insurance cover to a family of four, including self and any three dependents, against hospitalization expenses up to Rs 15,000 including Rs 7500 for OPD.

The principal artisan is also entitled to personal accidental benefit of Rs one lakh. Artisans up to the age of 80 years are eligible for coverage under the RGSSBY health scheme which is underwritten by ICICI Lombard General Insurance.

“The artisan communities have special needs so far as health insurance is concerned. We have designed this unique policy in consultation with the Ministry of Textiles and look forward to cover more and more artisans under RGSSBY. Cashless facility is a big boon to the artisans as they are not required to incur any amount upfront”, Dilip Jashnani, head (Financial Inclusion Solutions Group) of ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company, said in a release.

A network of 49 OPD centres in Orissa provide treatment on a cashless basis to the artisans including pre-existing diseases, maternity benefits, dental treatment and eye treatment. The insured artisans can also approach 14 empanelled hospitals across Orissa and avail cashless hospitalization facility. The beneficiaries of the scheme have to pay a very nominal premium as the bulk of the premium is subsidized by the government.

The enrollment in RGSSBY has crossed 19 lakh members across India. The artisans spread over 28 states and 608 districts benefit from this comprehensive health insurance scheme. The insured artisans have access to cashless hospitalization to network of 985 OPD centres and over 2870 network hospitals across urban and rural India. Nearly six lakh policy holders availed of RGSSBY’s unique cashless facility in 2009-10.
