ID cards from Wipro under ESIC project
BS Reporter / Chennai/ Bangalore Aug 26, 2009, 00:12 IST

Wipro Infotech, the India and West Asia IT business of Wipro, has announced that the first set of 25 pehchan (identity) cards has been distributed to the beneficiaries of the Employee State Insurance Corporation (ESIC). The ID cards containing detailed information about the ESIC beneficiaries were issued at a function held here on Tuesday which was attended by Union Minister for Labour and Employment Mallikarjun Kharge.

In March this year, Wipro bagged Rs 1,182 crore contract to implement ESIC’s Project Panchdeep, the IT roll-out project aimed at providing hassle-free services to its various stake-holders. This is part of a social security scheme being implemented by the ESIC, a statutory corporation under the Union Ministry of Labour and Employment. Anand Sankaran, senior VP & Head, India and Middle East, Wipro Infotech said, “It is really a momentous occasion for all of us to witness the beginning of an era of digitalised public health services to the masses. Our commitment to the project despite its scale has ensured we have met the challenging deadline and will do so for the milestones of the project in the coming months.”

Project Panchdeep contains five components including Pehchan, Milap, Pashan, Dhanwantri and Pragati. Project Pehchan comprises all services related to identification, authentication and verification of the insured persons. As part of the project, all insured persons and their family members will be provided with a pair of magnetic plastic cards.

The cards will have photographs of all family members along with their biometric details stored in it. With a card with the insured person and another with hisôher family, it would enable the family members to avail services from ESI hospitals and ESI dispensaries, even when they are travelling. ESIC plans to prepare around 24 million smart cards under the project.
