GSM service provider Idea Cellular has added 1.54 million new subscribers in August, taking its total subscriber base to 50.05 million. The addition has helped the Aditya Birla group company consolidate its position as the fifth-largest operator in the country and inch up closer to state-owned BSNL, data released by the Cellular Operators’ Association of India (COAI) said.
The association further said GSM operators added a total of 9.31 million users in August, a marginal dip from 9.47 million added during the previous month. The total number of GSM subscribers touched 335.45 million in August, compared with 325.7 million in July.
Reliance Communications (RCom)’s figures are excluded because it declares numbers separately. RCom is the second-largest player by way of subscribers, with the company providing both GSM and CDMA services.
Bharti Airtel continued to be the market leader with an addition of 2.82 million, taking its total to 107.99 million. The company had a market share of 32.19 per cent during the month.
Vodafone-Essar, the third largest player, added 2.19 million new users in August, taking its total to 80.87 million. It had a market share of 24.11 per cent.
BSNL added 1.36 million new customers, taking its total base to 52.05 million, while Loop Mobile added 66,909 new subscribers (total 2.42 million) and MTNL added 20,150 new customers (total 4.35 million).
