IIT-M faculty begin nine day protest
Press Trust of India / Chennai Aug 06, 2009, 13:16 IST

The faculty of IIT-Madras began a nine-day protest here today against "delay" in implementing the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations and warned of intensifying the agitation if the government failed to take cognisance of their protest.

"If the government does not respond to this protest, we have decided to take to other forms of protest such as going on mass casual leave and even staging hunger strike,"  M Thenmozhi, President, IIT-M Faculty Association, told PTI.

She said they have started the strike by wearing black badges while on duty from today to August 14.

Around 450 members from IIT-M, besides the other seven IITs in the country, are resorting to the black badge protest, she said.

The Association had yesterday said that the present IIT pay-scales were neither commensurate with the required qualifications nor enough to attract fresh talent, even to well established IITs and that the faculty are "frustrated with the inordinate delay" in implementing the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations.

They had warned they would have to take recourse to more "forceful and dignified" forms of protest if the government continued to ignore their demand.

Unofficially it is out: Bad bargain. The decline starts. Now people will move from IITs etc to the university system. Here is IIT pay structure. 1. AP 30000 basic 8000 grade pay pay band III No smooth transition to pay band IV as in the UGC system. As long as you are AP you stagnate in pay band III. This is even worse than for deputy registrars of educational institutions (who were with the same basic pay according to old scale Rs12000) since they go to pay band 4 after 5 years. 2. Associate Profs. 42800 basic grade pay 9500. This brings them below the UGC profs (with whom they were equivalent in old pay scale 16400 basic)since UGC gives a grade pay of Rs 10000 3. Professors 48000 basic grade pay Rs.10500. All this is below what Mehta committee recommends. Rs. 3l akh instead of Mehta recommendation of Rs. 4 lakh for travel etc. And absolutely nothing else.
