Indefinite strike by NLC workers ends
Press Trust of India / Neyveli Jul 06, 2010, 11:29 IST

The six-day indefinite strike by about 14,000 employees of Neyveli Lignite Corporation demanding a revision of wages, among other things, has ended.

The workers called off their strike at midnight last night and reported for duty for the first shift this morning, NLC sources said.

This followed a tripartite meeting at NLC's headquarters in Chennai between Labour Commissioner Jaganatha Rao, NLC Chief General Manager Lourdhas and DMK and PMK trade union leaders.

These unions are the ones recognised by the management.

"As per the agreement, wage revision calculated from September 1 2009, as also service weightage and other allowances. Arrears will be given from June 1 of that year," Lourdhas told PTI.

NLC sources said the strike had resulted in a production loss of about Rs 40 crore.

An agreement has been reached over the percentage of increase in wages and allowances, with the management saying it would pay 25 per cent fitment benefit of basic pay from January 1, 2007, a three per cent additional increment and three per cent additional weightage from September 1, 2009, and 40 per cent common allowance from January 1, 2010.

The trade unions have been demanding payment of an additional increment since January 1, 2007.
