India adds over 93 lakh GSM users in August
Press Trust of India / New Delhi Sep 10, 2009, 19:58 IST

The GSM operators added over 93 lakh subscribers in the month of August, taking the total cellular subscriber base to 33.54 crore.

Sunil Mittal-led Bharti Airtel topped the subscribers figure with 10.79 crore users and a 32.19 per cent market share. It added 28.18 lakh new users in August 2009, according to the data released by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI).

The addition of 93 lakh is, however, lower than about 1 crore subscribers addition by GSM operators in the month of July.

Vodafone Essar added 21.94 lakh new subscribers in the same month of August, with a GSM userbase of 8 crore. The telco has a market share of 24.11 per cent.

State-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL), which is struggling with its expansion plans due to delayed tenders, has added 13.56 lakh new users in the said month, about 3 lakhs less than its July addition. Its total GSM subscriber base stood at 5.2 crore with a market share of 15.52 per cent.

These total subscriber figures exclude Anil Ambani's Reliance Telecom.

Idea Cellular, the fourth-largest operator by subscribers, added 15.41 lakh subscribers in August, with its userbase touching 5 crore.

Aircel, which is expanding its network on a pan-India basis, added 13.13 lakh new users, taking its subscriber base to 2.44 crore.
