India's population will rise to a massive 1.53 billion by 2050, overtaking China and making the country the world's most populous nation.
According to a report by the National Commission on Population, India's population is expected to reach 1.19 billion by 2011, 1.27 billion by 2016, 1.34 billion by 2021 and 1.4 billion by 2026.
"India is estimated to increase its population by 18 million every year," Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha today.
The minister said the Family Welfare Programme in India is voluntary in nature, which enables a couple to adopt the family planning methods best suited to them according to their choice without any compulsion.
india's population can only be controlled if we let the gay people live freely!! because if there are more gays/lesbians there will be less babies. i'm sure a major chunk of population, not only can come out in public but also help curb the wrongdoings done to them, in the pretext of cultural stereotypes.
I don't recall seeing a single family control advertisement in the last 10 years.
There appear to be several incentives existing based on the size of the population for Politicians that there is absolutely no political will to discuss this subject. There are no lobbyist, financial muscle behind such arcane subjects!
Our education system & social taboos do not discuss the perils of over population. Our think tank (read TV anchors and the programs they sponsor) would rather discuss sensational issues than real ones!
I pray we get our 'act' together on this issue before its too late!
