| Indirect tax collection during February touched Rs 17,069 crore, a 16 per cent increase over the collection of Rs 14,737 crore during the corresponding period last year.

| The healthy increase in indirect tax collection has come despite a 4 per cent decline in customs collection to Rs 4,678 crore in February from Rs 4,867 crore in the same month last year.

| Excise and service tax collection witnessed an increase of 18 per cent and 84 per cent respectively. While excise collection during February increased to Rs 10,415 crore from Rs 8,795 crore in 2005, the service tax collection was Rs 1,976 crore compared with Rs 1,075 crore in February 2005. The excise collection is exclusive of cess not administered by the Department of Revenue.

| Cummulative indirect tax collection for April-February touched Rs 1,71,071 crore, a 16 per cent increase over the collection of Rs 1,47,238 crore during the corresponding period of 2005-06.

| Customs duty collection increased by 13 per cent to Rs 57,431 crore while excise duty (exclusive of cess) increased by 12 per cent to Rs 95,445 crore. Service tax collection during April-February increased by 68 per cent to Rs 18195 crore. |
