An Indo-Russian public forum will be held here as part of the ongoing 'Year of India' in Russia, to discuss problems and prospects in bilateral cooperation, and to undo the alienation that has developed between the people of the two countries since the collapse of the Soviet Union.
A 60-member Indian delegation comprising of scholars, parliamentarians and former diplomats, who arrived here today will attend the two-day public forum beginning here tomorrow.
The forum has been organised by the Russian agency for the international humanitarian cooperation and cultural relations as a major event of the ongoing 'Year of India' in Russia and as a precursor to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's forthcoming visit next month.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Zhukov, Congress MP Jai Prakash Agarwal and Indian Ambassador to Russia Prabhat Prakash Shukla would be the key speakers at the forum, which would focus on eliminating the growing alienation between the Indian and Russian public over last two decades after the Soviet collapse, the organisers said.
According to the organisers of the forum, it would provide an opportunity to discuss not only the recent achievements, problems and prospects in bilateral cooperation, but would also draw the attention of the Indian public opinion to the positive processes underway in Russia.
Special attention would be paid to the development of trade, economic, scientific-technological cooperation, closer interaction in foreign policy, in integration processes under way in Eurasia and Asian-Pacific regions.
The Indo-Russian Public Forum is part of the track-II diplomacy and over 100 Russian participants representing a wide spectrum of public life are expected to interact with their Indian counterparts.
