Infosys' energy utilisation 5% lower in FY'09
Press Trust of India / New Delhi Jun 07, 2009, 15:08 IST

Software major Infosys Technologies reduced its per capita energy utilisation by five per cent with a slew of initiatives taken by the company in FY09.

In its annual report, Infosys said it has taken steps including the launch of carbon footprint calculator 'InGreen', which has helped the company reduce its carbon footprint by five per cent.

Carbon footprint refers to the amount of greenhouse gases produced as a result of human activities.

With the upgrade of teleconferencing equipment, the IT firm has been able to cut cost. "The average number of video conferences has gone up three-fold from around 300 per month during August 2008 to (the) current 1,000 conferences per month," Infosys said.

Apart from designing 'green buildings' and water recycling, Infosys is also working on improving the efficiency of its IT infrastructure and data centres by adopting virtualisation and consolidation of servers and data centres to cut energy spends.

With the introduction of e-forms and by using duplex printing, the report said Infosys had reduced its printouts by 25-30 per cent monthly.
