Infosys expects increase in patent filings
Kirtika Suneja / New Delhi Feb 24, 2010, 00:46 IST

Infosys Technologies expects an increase in its patent filings on the back of new technologies like cloud computing, analytics and emerging information and communication technologies.

During the third quarter ended December 2009, Infosys, India’s second-largest software exporter by revenue, applied for 18 patents in India and the US. The software major, which has 219 pending patent applications in India and the US, has been granted six patents by the United States Patent and Trademark Office, two of which are in data communication and abstract core. Over the last three years, the company applied for 240 patents, of which 220 are in India and the rest in the US.

“We are exploring newer technologies in the areas of cloud computing and development analytics, depending on how expensive the proposition is and the intellectual property (IP) that it will create. Moreover, it is quite possible for us to file for patents in other countries like Europe, besides India and the US, going ahead,” Subu Goparaju, Vice President and Head, Software Engineering and Technology Labs (SETLabs), told Business Standard.

In fact, SETLabs, which is the company’s primary R&D centre, has generated almost 50 per cent of the patents, while the remaining came from Infosys’ other divisions. There are 650 people in the SETLabs team who create frameworks and tools for innovating technologies in areas such as malleable architecture, pervasive access, flexible processes and personalised information.
