With rains continuing to wreak havoc in different parts of Karnataka, global IT majors have come out with various initiatives to provide assistance to the flood victims in the North Karnataka region. Global firms like Cisco and SAP, have distributed houses in the flood-affected pockets in the state, in partnership with the state government.
Networking major Cisco has recently handed over 500 houses to Karnataka government as part of its 'project samudaya’. The houses handed over by Cisco in N Malkapur and Khataknur villages of Raichur, have been constructed as per the government guidelines and specifications. According to the company, the model design is based on the feedback received from the village residents.
As part of its corporate social responsibility, Cisco in October 2009, announced a donation of $10 million comprising of cash, services, solutions and equipment over two years to support rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts in the Raichur district of Karnataka. Cisco has committed to reconstruct five villages in the flood-affected Raichur district through a public-private partnership model.
“We are encouraged by the Government of Karnataka’s shared vision to rehabilitate and build sustainable communities in the flood-affected areas of Raichur. Our vision is to improve the quality of life in these communities by using technology to provide access to affordable healthcare and education services,” said Wim Elfrink, chief globalisation officer and executive vice president, Cisco Services.
Meanwhile, business software applications firm SAP has handed over 90 houses to the flood victims in Raichur district of North Karnataka. The houses which were constructed with SAP’s implementation partners HOPE Foundation are of 260 - 270 sq ft each with one bedroom concrete structures and solid RCC roof. The project took over six months for completion.
“At SAP, we believe collaborative efforts can make a bigger impact to the society. The fact that our employees, driven by a great sense of social responsibility and dedication, led the project right from making visits to the flood affected areas soon after the calamity; to collecting funds and seeing the project through its completion in record time is a matter of pride for SAP and me,” said V R Ferose, MD SAP Labs India.
