'Jewellry tops online product sales'

The Indian e-commerce sector is getting a good response from rural and Tier-III cities, Sharat Digumarti, head (operations), eBay India said at the launch of the eBay India census 2010 at Hyderabad.

"Jewellry is the largest selling product online and every four minutes a jewellry piece is sold in India. The purchasing trend is different according to geographical areas. Consumers in rural towns prefer to purchase dress materials, while the Tier-II and Tier-III consumers prefer to buy Sarees, whereas in metros, it’s designer wear,” he said.

The third eBay census report revealed that online shopping is active in 1,054 Indian rural towns. And, India’s Top-5 rural hubs are Ambalapuzha (Kerala), Sajiyavadar (Gujarat), Adala (Gujarat), Abdalipur (West Bengal) and Kangayampalaym (Tamil Nadu).

In India, eBay India has over 2.5 million registered users and over 3,296 eCommerce hubs across 2,471 cities. It operates in 28 countries and seven Union territories. The company has started its India operation in 1995 and currently has six lakh listings under 2,000 categories for the Indian consumers.

The overall Indian eCommerce market in 2007 the last time they had published, it was Rs 9,200 crore and it was projected a 30 per cent year-on-year growth.

Technology is the most traded vertical category in India, contributing 48 per cent of transactions according to the eBay census, and lifestyle product transaction contributes 34 per cent.

eBay India is growing at 64 per cent annually and its rural eCommerce segment is growing at 33 per cent.

Hyderabad was ranked as sixth largest eCommerce hub in India. It has export trends to buyers in 189 countries and import trends from sellers in 114 countries.
