Job-seekers prefer to work for socially responsible firms
Press Trust of India / New Delhi November 4, 2009, 14:53 IST

Nearly 90 per cent of job-seekers have a strong preference for organisations with sound ethical and environmental policies, and are ready to work for them even on a lesser role or a lower salary, a survey says.

According to the survey, conducted by global workforce solutions provider Kelly Services, employees across all age generations, including 'Gen X' (aged 30-47) and baby boomers (aged 48-65) get attracted to ethically and environmentally responsible organisations.

Around 90 per cent of respondents preferred a company that is considered ethically and socially responsible and around 87 per cent said they were more likely to want for an environmentally responsible company.

"Employees take pride not only in what they do while at work, but in what their organisation stands for and how it is perceived by the entire community," Kelly Services Managing Director Kamal Karanth said.

The survey further highlighted that almost two-thirds of all workers are prepared to accept even a pay cut or a demotion in order to work for an organisation with a sound corporate reputation.

Around 64 per cent would be prepared to accept a lesser role or a lower salary to work for a firm with a strong environmental and community conscience.

"Firms that develop a culture of social responsibility send a powerful message about the type of talent they want to attract and the organisational norms they want to cultivate. They serve as a benchmark as to what is expected and are viewed favourably by prospective employees," Kamal added.

Around 77 per cent of respondents said while deciding where to work, an organisation's reputation for ethical conduct was "very important", and about 59 per cent felt that the employer's policies towards global warming were "very important".

Karanth further said: "It provides a sense of fulfilment to be part of an enterprise that is focused not only on performance outcomes but also on larger social goals."

The Kelly Global Workforce Index, which surveyed nearly 100,000 people in 34 countries, including almost 5,000 in India reveals opinions about work and the workplace from a generational viewpoint.
