JSW Steel production up 60% in April
Press Trust of India / New Delhi May 11, 2009, 13:31 IST

Sajjan Jindal-led JSW Steel today said its steel production surged by 60 per cent to 4.56 lakh tonnes in April on the back of higher demand from sectors like construction, automobiles and white goods.

In the corresponding month of the last fiscal, the company's crude steel production was 2.84 lakh tonnes, a statement from JSW Steel said.

Besides the spurt in demand, the steel major attributed the growth in output to additional steel produced at its recently commissioned 2.8 million tonne per annum furnace at Vijaynagar.

The company's April production included 33,000 tonnes of crude steel and 5,000 tonnes of long-steel items produced during the trial run of the new blast furnace.

In the segment of flat-rolled products, used by sectors like consumer durables, JSW Steel's output rose by 18 per cent to 2.69 lakh tonnes.

Similarly, in long-rolled items, used primarily in construction activities, the output increased by an impressive 78 per cent to 0.61 lakh tonnes.

In April 2008, the company had produced 2.29 lakh tonnes of flat-rolled products and 0.34 lakh tonnes of long-rolled long items.

As part of its brownfield expansion, the steel major has enhanced the capacity of its Vijaynagar plant to 6.8 million tonnes and plans to further augment it to nearly 10 million tonnes by the end of next year.
