Karnataka plans grand celebrations for Dasara

Karnataka government is planning to celebrate the world famous Mysore Dasara festival on a grand scale this year. To organise various activities to mark the festival, the state government has increased financial allocation to Rs 6 crore. The 10-day festival will commence from September 19.

Addressing a press conference here today, Shobha Karandlaje, minister for rural development and panchayat raj and district in-charge minister for Mysore, said in order to attract overseas Kannadigas in big numbers, the government is starting promotional activities two months ahead of the festival. A booklet containing details of the festival and information on Mysore and surrounding places of tourist attraction will be printed and circulated in all national and international flights originating from Bangalore, she said.

She said the government is also launching a dedicated website where all the information on the festival will be uploaded, so that foreign travelers can plan their schedule in a much better fashion.

In addition to this, an exclusive Dasara tourism circuit will be started, wherein important tourist locations in and around Mysore, temples, forest areas among others will be included. The film academy will screen special movies on this occasion, she said.

Regular events like exhibition, sports meets will be held during the Dasara festival, she said adding that foreign artists will be invited to perform during the festival. This year, four taluks of Chamarajanagar, Srirangapatna and Malavalli will be included in the exhibition. The state government is also planning to regularise the services of 137 mahouts who take care of elephants during the Dasara festival, Karandlaje informed.

The education department has agreed to declare holiday for the school children from September 19 onwards to facilitate them to take part in the exhibition, she added.
