| Karnataka to implement Vaidyanathan Committee report |

The state government will soon implement recommendations of the Prof A Vaidyanathan Committee on reviving the rural primary agricultural credit cooperative societies in Karnataka. The state cabinet has approved the committee’s report.
Karnataka minister for cooperation Laxman Savadi said the government was awaiting clearance from the governor to implement the recommendations. Addressing members of agriculture cooperative banks in Hubli at an awareness programme, the minister said the government would issue an ordinance in the next 15 days to implement the recommendations.
Once the recommendations are implemented, there will be no scope for political interference in the functioning of rural agriculture credit cooperative societies.
It will also help revive the district cooperative central banks and state cooperative apex bank.
Savadi said the KCC Bank, the district central cooperative bank for undivided Dharwad district comprising of Dharwad, Haveri and Gadag districts, would get Rs 126 crore while the apex bank would get Rs 750 crore from both the state and central governments.
The minister informed that the cooperative sector had mobilised Rs 21.20 crore towards the Chief Minister’s Calamity Relief Fund.
The sector also intends to build 1,000 houses for flood victims at a cost of Rs 10 crore. The cooperative sector will adopt a flood-hit village and build new houses there. The new township will be named Sahakar Nagar, he added.
