Former finance secretary Vijay Kelkar will be the chairman of the 13th Finance Commission, a constitutional body which makes recommendations on the distribution of central tax proceeds between the Centre and states.
A notification naming Kelkar and the other members of the commission is expected soon.
The recommendations of the commission will take effect from the five-year period beginning April 2010.
The 12th Finance Commission, notified on November 1, 2002, was headed by C Rangarajan. Its recommendations were made for the 2005-10 period.
Kelkar, an economist by profession, has held several important positions, including those of secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
