The Kerala government, with the active partnership of the Coconut Development Board (CDB), is planning to implement a special project to encourage coconut farming and increase productivity.
According to Minnie Mathew, chairman, CDB, the Rs 1,924 crore project has been submitted to the Centre for approval. The thrust of the project would be replanting of old and diseased coconut trees and farming other crops in coconut farms.
She said that CDB would allocate Rs 220 crore for the project and give necessary assistance to the project. Rootwilt disease has brought down the coconut productivity considerably in the state.
Tamil Nadu has the highest productivity with 8,270 nuts per hectare followed by Kerala with 5,895.
