The Kerala Government has decided to revive the mega port project at Vizhinjam, with a state-run company to create an infrastructure worth Rs 450 crore.
The state-owned special purpose company Vizhinjam International Seaport (VISL) would complete basic works like road and rail links at the project site, 20 km south off here, Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan told reporters after a state cabinet meeting today.
The company would also scout for a private partner for subsequent phases of its development.
For completion of these works in 12 to 18 months from now, the co-operation from the Railways and the National Highway Authority would also be sought, he said.
A long-cherished dream of Kerala, Vizhinjam International Container Terminal project had in the past run into difficulties, mostly on account of legal flaws in proceduers in finding private partners.
The last one to opt out of the scheme was infrastructure major Lanco Kondapally Ltd after a rival bidder challenged in court the way the government went about the bidding process.
The potential of Vizhinjam as a major port was identified in the mid-20th century, considering its natural depth and strategic location in the international maritime route.
The past estimation of the greenfield project had been that it would require Rs 4,500 crore to Rs 6,000 crore for completion of all stages.
