Till a few years back the scene of a tanker contractor charging Rs 20 for bucket full of water from desperate villagers in remote areas of Gujarat during summer was not rare.
However, all that has changed, thanks to the Sardar Sarovar project and our pumps, claimed RK Shrivastava the director of Kirloskar Brothers.
He was speaking at the awards function for the competition organised by the magzine Pumps India for engineering students.
Shrivastava said that after the dam was built, the Sardar Sarovar authorities were faced with the problem of transporting itswater to remote areas of Kutch. So they approached the Kirloskar Brothers and offered a shoe-string budget and limited time to complete the task.
However, the company's engineers and technicians worked day and night and produced a bunch of 70 powerful pumps, which were capable of pumping the water so as to cover a distance of 232 kilometres.
Shrivastava further added that all the work was done was at a fraction of the cost of Rs 3,000 crore estimated by one foreign company for the same project.
