Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) has been selected by the United States government as an educational service provider in India for the English Access Micro-scholarship Programme.
The programme is the first of its kind by the American government for any tribal institute in India. It will be launched from December 1, 2009, Dr. Achuyata Samanta, founder of KISS and KIIT said.
Addressing the media here, Samanta said, English Access Micro-scholarship Programme will make study of English more easy and accessible to the economically deprived tribal students of KISS.
Under the programme, US Ambassador to India will facilitate English language study for 100 tribal students aged between 14 and 18 over a period of 2 years. The participants will be selected on the basis of parental income and their English efficiency.
This is expected to help the students to develop integrated personalities and a sense of responsibilities in them. Fulbright scholars, employees of the US Embassy, Peace Corp volunteer and English language fellows will teach English using modern and computer aid programmes. The entire scholarship cost will be borne by the US Embassy.
On the other had, the United Nation’s Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) has also announced to partner with Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) to start a project for overcoming knowledge and skills deficit in the state. This is considered to be the biggest project of UNFPA in the state and first of its kind in the South East Asia.
