| Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) is gearing up to set up adequate infrastructure to cope with growing pressure of containerised cargo at the Kolkata port popularly known as the Kolkata Dock System (KDS).

| A K Chanda, chairman, KoPT said, "Containerisation of cargo is an emerging trend all around the globe. We are also witnessing significant growth in containerised cargo at KDS and Haldia Dock Complex (HDC)."

| KDS and HDC were both under KoPT. Chanda today inaugurated a container parking yard at the erstwhile shed 4 of KDS. Being adjacent to the existing container berth at KDS, this facility is likely to bring down cargo handling cost.

| Spreading over, 10,200 sq mt, the park is likely to accommodate 650 TEU container. The cost of setting up the container parking park was Rs 2.20 crore. It was completed in a record time of six months, the spokesperson added.

| KoPT has started construction work of a container parking yard at Basra, adjacent to KDS.

| "Spreading over 50,000 square metre, the container parking yard would be ready within the next year," said an official spokesperson of KoPT.

| The cost was likely to be around Rs10-12 crore.

| The container parking capacity at KDS currently stands at 9,000 TEU. Presently, there were 29 berth at KDS out of which four berth were meant for container cargo handling and remaining 25 for break bulk handling.

| Chanda explained that KoPT had already started setting up adequate infrastructure.

| "According to our study, containerised cargo at KDS at the end of 2006-07 could touch 2,62,000 twenty equivalent units (TEUs) against last year's figure of 2,06,481 TEUs. We are gearing up to provide infrastructure facility to support this growth," said Chanda.

| Container cargo handled at KDS from April till date stands at 82,414 TEUs as compared to last year's corresponding figure of 72,026 TEUs, recording a growth of 14.40 per cent as compared to national growth of nine per cent, informed Chanda. |
