| The Kolkata Port Trust(KoPT) has firmed up plans to set up a full fledged terminal at Diamond Harbour to facilitate efficient handling of cargo.

| "We are confident that the terminal at Diamond Harbour will lead to efficient handling of cargo. It will also facilitate night navigation", A K Chanda, chairman of KoPT, said.

| The turnaround time would fall due to the jetties, he added.

| Last month the members of the containerisation committee, led by PVK Mohan visited Diamond Harbour to examine the feasibility of setting up a dedicated terminal. Chanda said that for the deep draft port proposed for West Bengal, the Centre would fund a study for identification of the ideal location for the deep draft port.

| "We will introduce new equipment for container handling. The introduction of mobile harbour cranes for mobile operations has brought down loading and unloading times and reduced transaction costs", Chanda said.

| He emphasised the need for developing coastal shipping and inland waterways transport (IWT).

| Chanda, speaking at a logistics seminar organised by CII, said growth needed corresponding improvement in infrastructure.

| "We have to integrate related infrastructure sectors like ports, railways or IWT, and ensure greater coordination among them", Chanda said. |
