KPCL plant in Chhattisgarh likely to start by December
BS Reporter / Kolkata/ Raipur Mar 05, 2010, 00:27 IST

The construction work for the 1600-Mw power plant to be set up by the state-owned Karnataka Power Corp Ltd (KPCL) in Chhattisgarh is likely to start by December this year.

The KPCL had inked a deal with the Chhattisgarh government in September 2008 for the project. The state government had allotted 1,260 acres to KPCL for the power plant that would come up in Bodna in Janjgir-Champa district.

“The land acquisition process for the project has started and it is likely to be completed within six months,” a top state government official said. The construction work for the project is likely to start by December this year, the official added.

The KPCL, and Larsen and Toubro (L&T) had recently signed a Joint Venture agreement for the 1600-Mw (2 X 800 Mw) coal-based super critical thermal power project. The cost of the project is likely to be Rs 6,000 crore.

Sources said that under the agreement signed between both the state governments, Chhattisgarh would get 26 per cent share in the power produced in the plant while the Karnataka government would transmit remaining 76 per cent power for the domestic consumption in the state. The power plant would help both the states to meet the electricity demand.
