New Volvo buses to ply on Mangalore-Manipal route.
Karnataka government has approved a 6 per cent wage hike for employees of Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and other public transport corporations in the state with retrospective effect from April this year. The arrears will be paid by way of cash, state transport minister R Ashok said.
Addressing reporters here he said, “After nearly four years wage hike has been effected to KSRTC and other corporations’ employees in the state. There are in all one lakh employees. The hike in wages will result in a financial burden of Rs 386 crore to the government.”
The transport department has also approved Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) request for buying 380 ordinary buses to be deployed in Bangalore city.
“The ordinary buses are being bought through open e-tender which will be called shortly. BMTC has set a budget of Rs 8 lakh per bus. Approval for buying another 400 buses in phase II has also been cleared,” said Ashok.
A trial run to introduce Volvo buses in coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada is being chalked out. The KSRTC is planning to introduce Volvo bus service between Mangalore and Manipal - a distance of 65 kilometers on trial basis.
Ashok said, “By introducing Volvo buses, we are sending a tough message that government means business and will not be releasing nationalised bus routes allotted to KSRTC to private bus operators.” “As a step towards this, we are planning to introduce 10 low chassis Volvo buses, a similar model is operated in Bangalore. For this, BMTC will buy new buses and loan it to KSRTC to operate the Mangalore and Manipal route,” he added.
KSRTC board has approved beefing up security at Kempegowda Bus Station (Majestic Bus Stand) and other key bus stations like Jayanagar, Shivajinagar, Shantinagar, Satellite Bus Station on Mysore road in the wake of terrorist attacks.
“The board has approved setting up of an exclusive police station at KBS to handle travel, crime and other law and order issues. We will recruit 153 security personnel to be deployed at all the bus stations in Bangalore city,” Ashok said.
