| The Government of India, on Monday, appointed Verghese Kurien, former chairman of National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), as the chancellor of the University of Allahabad for a term of five years with immediate effect from April 17, 2006.

| This was conveyed to Kurien on Monday through fax.

| The post of chancellor of the University of Allahabad was created for the first time which means Kurien will be the first chancellor of the university, according to sources in Kurien's office.

| Kurien, it has been learnt, will be operating from Anand.
|
| |
| As per the norms, governors are only eligible for chancellor of the university.
|
| |
| It will be an exception in Kurien's case, who will be appointed as chancellor by ministry of Human Resource & Development.

| The memo was signed by S S Mahlawat, under Secretary to the Government of India.

| Couple of decades ago, Kurien had served Gujarat Agricultural University as a vice-chancellor.

| As of now he will be serving University of Allahabad as chancellor for five years.
|
| |
| However, Kurien has still to receive his post for which the central government will be sending the details to him soon. |
