L&T Power ends BHEL monopoly

L&T Power, which started production yesterday at its Hazira (Gujarat) facility, has become the second domestic boiler, turbine, and generator (BTG) equipment maker after government-owned Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL). The company has already bagged 6,500 Mw of orders.

L&T Power will deliver its first turbine, for Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation’s (APGenco’s) 2x800 Mw Krishnapatanam project by September, Ravi Uppal, chief executive and managing director of L&T Power told Business Standard.

“We will deliver the second turbine within three to four months after delivering the first turbine. Boilers and its parts will also start to roll out from September or October. We expect to deliver other orders at an interval of every four-five months,” he said.

Ravi UppalAP Genco’s order is worth Rs 1,557 crore. L&T Power also has a Rs 6,897-crore contract from Maharashtra State Power Generation Co Ltd for three 660-Mw supercritical (BTG) units at Nagpur and another Rs 4,000-crore order from Jaypee Industries for 2x660-Mw supercritical equipment for a power plant. It also has a Rs 1,635-crore order from Madhya Pradesh Power Generating Company Ltd for a 1,200 Mw Balance of Plant (BoP) package for the Shree Singaji (Malwa) thermal power plant.

Uppal said the company would increase its manufacturing capacity to 6,000 Mw by 2012-13. All the existing orders will be done by 2014.
