Lawyers today observed a strike to protest against the imposition of service tax on them by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee.
"We have boycotted work today in protest of imposition of service tax on us. We have also written a letter to Bar Council of UP and Bar Council of India asking them to immediately initiate talks with the Centre on the matter," Kanpur Bar Association President Ganesh Dikshit told PTI.
He also questioned the basis on which government was planning to clamp tax on them.
"The fees, which lawyers take from their clients varies according to the case. Since we do not have any uniform fee structure, on what basis service tax will be calculated," Dikshit said.
He also warned that if no steps are taken, the lawyers would soon intensify their agitation.
Lawyers have no reason to get exemption fro Service Tax. The argument given by them applies to all services, where the charges differ from case to case and even from place to place. If they have nothing to hide, then they have nothing to worry.
