Lawyers in all five district courts in the capital today went on a day-long strike in protest against alleged lack of security in court premises.
"Court premises here are visited by all sorts of people including criminals. For last few days, the incidents of violence against the lawyers had increased owing to absence of proper security arrangement," Mahesh Chand Sharma, President Coordination Committee of All Bar Associations of Delhi alleged.
Lawyers abstained from appearing in courts and the matters listed in the courts were adjourned, he said.
However, in a few cases, the advocates were seen appearing in the courts to argue bail matters.
A meeting of bar associations of Tis Hazari, Patiala House, Karkardooma, Rohini and Dwarka was held last evening, in which it was decided that the lawyers would observe strike.
An advocate practising in Karkardooma courts was recently abducted by unidentified persons from outside the courts complex and later set free by them as they realised he was not their target.
Sharma demanded setting up of permanent police post at all five district courts premises, besides frisking of visitors among other things, to instill confidence among the people and particularly the lawyers' community with regard to security.
